What Is Laravel and Why Should You Care?

You do not need to know what Laravel is. You really do not. In the same way you do not need to know what engine is in your car.

But if you are about to spend £80,000 or more on a piece of software, you should probably know what it is built on and why. Laravel is a PHP framework. PHP is the language that runs about 77 percent of all websites.

WordPress uses it. Facebook started on it. It has been around forever, which means it is stable, well-supported, and there will always be developers who can work on your project if you need to change agency later.

That last bit is important. Laravel specifically is popular because it is elegant. I know that is a weird word to use about code, but developers have standards.

It is structured. It is secure by default. It scales well.

And it has a massive community behind it, which means if something goes wrong at 2am, someone has already fixed it before and written about it online. We use it for everything on the web side. Client dashboards.

Booking systems. CRM systems. Admin panels.

E-commerce platforms. If it lives on the internet and needs to do something more than look pretty, Laravel is probably the right tool. The question you should ask any developer before they start building is: 'What happens if we outgrow this?' If the answer involves starting again from scratch, they have picked the wrong tool.
